Day 5–Dubai (13th Dec) Abu Dhabi Day trip

(unfortunately a lot of pics today came out grainy as I forgot to change the ISO down from the prior nights pics Sad smile, not happy at all about that!!)

Today we were doing a day tour of Abu Dhabi. The primary sight we wanted to see was the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. As we wanted to see that during sunset, we decided to start the tour around 10am instead of the usual 9am. This was a plus with the girls, especially Pooja who hated early morning wakeups.

Zaeed our driver was at the hotel at 10, first stop was the Burj Al Arab, quick pic of that, then onto the Jumeirah Al Qasr. Both these hotels are out of this world, a simple drive by was fine. Next was a ride on the Palm Jumeirah to see the magnificent Atlantis. It is amazing what they have created on a man made land! It is an entire city being built on this land which did not exist around 20 years back!

IMG_8809IMG_8812

It was around 11am, time to head to Abu Dhabi, a long and boring drive of just over an hour. The road to Abu Dhabi is very straight with only a couple of slight turns.

Unlike Dubai with an endless line of oppulent sky scrapers, Abu Dhabi was subdued on this front.
First stop was the Emirates palace, and wow what a Hotel!! Ok this was ozzzing luxury – very Oppulent.

DSC02380DSC02383DSC02388DSC02392

Good place for a lunch break.

IMG_3532

Post that we took a short visit to the Marina Mall, and then on to the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. The Marina mall was nothing compared to what we had seen in Dubai, very ordinary Sad smile.

Around 4pm we headed out to the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque – I would recommend this time to all to see this beautiful mosque in both daylight and at night.
First however, all girls had to be draped in the traditional islamic ladies wear covering arms and feet. (Neha unfortunately got a long one, walking around was a challenge!)

DSC02437DSC02443DSC02444DSC02450DSC02496DSC02499DSC02509DSC02518DSC02519DSC02526DSC02532DSC02539DSC02564DSC02568DSC02579DSC02592

A Mosque like no other, I have not seen many Mosques, but off the few I have seen and visited this is ranked No.1.
Definitely worth a visit, one of the highlights of this trip!

It was around 6:30pm, time to head back to Dubai. The highlights were the Emirates Palace and the Mosque.

Day 4–Dubai (12th Dec)–Dubai Parks

Theme park day today, we were covering MotionGate and Bollywood Parks. MotionGate was all movie themed from the major Hollywood studios, like Columbia, Dreamworks, LionsGate etc, whilst Bollywood was …well all about Bollywood – the very first Bollywood theme park in the world!!
Since Bollywood park opens at 4pm, we had from 11am to 4pm to finish of MotionGate then onto Bollywood which was open till midnight, hoping to complete both in one day – fingers crossed.

No rush this morning, we were leaving at 10:30, so a relaxed start to the morning. Breakfast sorted then onto the Taxi for Dubai Parks – which is very very far, did not realise it, but it is 30 minutes travelling at over 110km/h.

IMG_8734 IMG_8735

Arrived at the park at 11am. A massive complex, It has 4 parks in it, Legoland, MotionGate, Bollywood and a Water Park. We were doing 2 parks, now to find the entrance to MotionGate. Required a bit of navigating and asking around, then a shuttle to MotionGate and finally we were at the entrance. The place looked like a nice setup, so far so good!

DSC02069DSC02070DSC02071DSC02072

We had pre-purchased tickets, so to the gates, a very cool system of entry, each persons finger was scanned and recorded for the next park. (So when entering Bollywood parks, we would need to scan our fingers to be matched against the ticket to ensure the same person is going to the parks – nifty security). Thru the gates, the park was similar to other theme parks, with the main street filled with shops selling toys, souvenirs etc. Following that the park was divided into each of the lands. Got the maps and tried to figure out the shows to watch and times, gave up in the end and simply went for the top rides – these were easy to identify on the map!!

DSC02075DSC02076DSC02077DSC02079motiongate_greenhornetMotiongate-Dubai-Hunger-Games-Capitol-Bullet-TrainDSC02082DSC02083DSC02085DSC02087DSC02089DSC02090

In the first hour, we did two amazing roller coasters and a virtual reality ride. The Green Hornet was a good coaster, however it is the Hunger Games bullet train that is the best, infact, it would be one of the best coasters I have been on, lots of fun.

It was just past 12 and the Dreamworks land was not due to open till 1pm, chance to get some quick lunch, out to the Smurfs land to the “Very Smurfy Cafe”, a very cute cafe decored in the Smurf theme, all very cute and fun, except for the service, they were soooooooo slow!! Something about being fast & organised, they do not understand or fail to work on.

 DSC02091IMG_8748

Food was ok, it was the simple chicken burger and chips, nothing fantastic or worth raving about, enough to recharge the batteries and keep on moving.

Next was Dreamworks land – which had Madagascar, Shrek, Kungfu Panda and How to train your Dragon. An amazing fountain at the entry with characters from all these movies – was so so cool.

DSC02094DSC02099DSC02106DSC02157DSC02158DSC02159DSC02160DSC02161DSC02162DSC02163

This would have to be one of the best character theme fountains I have seen to-date, I reckon even better then DisneyLand!!

First to the Shrek land, and what a setup it was, no rides but the setup was a replica of Shrek’s village!

DSC02112DSC02114DSC02118DSC02120DSC02122DSC02124DSC02129DSC02131

Next was the land of How to train your dragon, and does it transport you to the Dragon era.

DSC02134DSC02136DSC02138DSC02139DSC02140DSC02142DSC02143DSC02144

Another roller coaster here, with a lot of turns and spins!

Next was Madagascar and Kung fu Panda, unfortunately rides in Kung fu panda were closed, however the Madagascar coaster was super fun, we went on that twice!

DSC02145DSC02146DSC02147DSC02150DSC02154DSC02156IMG_8776IMG_8779

DSC02165DSC02170DSC02173DSC02181DSC02183DSC02184

It had been a fun filled few hours, highly recommend this park for all ages! Rides here are great – 5 star!

Around 3:30pm we headed out of the park for the Bollywood park, quick pitstop at Coffee Club for a recovery session, then onto Bollywood Park.

DSC02187DSC02198DSC02203DSC02209DSC02211DSC02212DSC02213

Entering the park, the feel is soooo bollywood, with giant posters of the stars, bollywood music playing in the background, this was great. Neha could not help doing a few dance moves on the songs being played.

Family day 3Family day1

DSC02216DSC02221DSC02222DSC02223DSC02224DSC02225DSC02226DSC02228DSC02229DSC02230DSC02234DSC02235DSC02236DSC02237DSC02244DSC02248DSC02249Sholay Ride

The Lagaan and Sholay sets were super. Both showing the same feel of the movies. Lagaan had a virtual ride, not bad, whilst the Sholay was a shootem ride, a bit of fun trying to find Gabbar and kill his baddies.

Dabangg stunt show was next, and it was done very well, had all the famous moves and lines of Salman Khan!

DSC02251DSC02252DSC02253DSC02262DSC02263DSC02265DSC02270DSC02274DSC02275DSC02276DSC02293DSC02300

Next was on the sets of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. (Unfortunately I had put the ISO on high for the Dabaangg show and forgot to tone it down, next few pictures are very grainy due to that Sad smile).
Here we were given a chance to see how green screen and special effects are used in the film industry – similar to what is shown at Universal Studios, not at that level, but lots of fun, I was lucky to play a part in that! This was followed by the Bollywood Super Heros, Krissh and Ra.One.

DSC02308DSC02313DSC02311DSC02316DSC02317DSC02312

Family night1Neha Pooja night1

It was only around 7pm, we had finished the park, decided to head back to the hotel, everyone was super tired of all the walking today. The walk back to the Taxi took us through some great mini villages in the park, it was like little Europe, if we had more energy we would have loved to walk through this, but was not to be.

For dinner, I rang ahead to Benhiana Japanese in Jumeirah, they could accommodate us, so Taxi straight to that place. We ordered some amazing Japanese, I guess as we were so tired it did make us less picky, nevertheless this place did serve some very good meals. Highly recommended.

A very big day for us all, but lots of fun and to top it off, a good meal.

Day 3–Dubai (11th Dec 2017)

Today we would be visiting the tallest building in the world – “The Burj Khalifa”, top viewing tickets were booked for 10:30am.

Got a taxi from our hotel around 9:30am, more than enough time to find the place without rushing.

DSC01750DSC01752

Taxi drop off was at the entrance of the Dubai mall, this was BIG. Even better was the giant aquarium in the centre!!

DSC01754DSC01755DSC01757DSC01762

Took us a bit to find the ticketing counter (am glad we left early). We were around 15 mins earlier than our scheduled time of 10:30, not too many people in the mornings, so you can walk straight through (on the way back I did notice a lot of people who had arrived early and were required to wait for their allocated slots!! – tip book an early visit to this place, less crowd and more time to look around)

Then escalators down to walk us thru how this marvel was built and the long walk to the lifts.

DSC01767DSC01769DSC01773DSC01776DSC01779

These lifts were travelling at 9metres a second. The media presentation inside the lift was nice, but could not match the NY Freedom Tower lift media presentation.
However the view from the top beat all towers hands down!

Lots of pics…

DSC01790DSC01899DSC01900DSC01905DSC01780DSC01795DSC01797DSC01827DSC01829DSC01834DSC01843DSC01847DSC01863DSC01873DSC01886DSC01890DSC01909

It was then time to select the numerous portraits they had taken of us upon entry and exit…lots to pick from, selected the softcopy option – much better value in my opinion.

681200768120216812287681322968132746813296

Back down on ground level, time to walk around the place and find a place to eat. Nita looked up Eataly, recommended by someone she follows on Instagram, turned out to be a great selection!

DSC01910DSC01917DSC01919DSC01925DSC01926DSC01927DSC01928DSC01929DSC01934DSC01936DSC01939DSC01942

We ordered the platter for 2 but it was more then enough for all of us, comes with Antipasto, mini cheese balls, Pizza with 2 flavours & 2 pastas. This was soo good. Something else I noticed, most restaurants do not serve NORMAL bottled water, instead you get the top French/Italian glass bottled range!! Well I drank a LOT of Italian water in this trip.

Nita and Neha wanted to explore the mall more, we decided to split, me and Pooja just walked around, whilst Neha and Nita did what girls do in shopping malls Winking smile.

DSC01944DSC01948DSC01950

All caught up again around 3pm, time to hit the aquarium.

DSC01954DSC01958DSC01961DSC01964DSC01969DSC01975DSC01976DSC01980DSC01981

Our feet were killing us by the end of this, we had been on the move the entire day. The original plan was to hang around till after 6 to watch the fountains, but we were in no state to walk around more, time for a quick coffee break then back to the hotel, Pooja could not walk any further.

Back at the hotel, kids were back in the room, Nita was in nearby massage place which offered the best neck massage. Time to revive.

Later that evening, Neha & Pooja simply wanted to lie in the beds and not go out, got some takeway for them – there was a Nandos connected to the hotel lobby, which was great for this. Me and Nita decided to head to the UpTown rooftop bar at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, these bars did not allow kids so this was a good opportunity.

What a place the Jumeirah hotel! Took the lift to the 24th floor with a very scary view to the lobby from the top!!

IMG_8705IMG_8712

On to the outdoor rooftop bar, we were greeted to an amazing panoramic view of Dubai skyline, and to our left was the amazing Burj Al Arab!!

DSC02020DSC02034DSC02037DSC02053DSC02014DSC02048DSC02057DSC02059DSC02066DSC02067

A nice rooftop bar, with smooth tunes, great drinks, awesome views, food range was however limited but that is not what you are here for!
Highly recommend this place to all, very very good!!

An amazing finish to the day Smile.

Day 2 – Dubai (10th Dec 2017)

Today was Desert Safari – pickup was around 3:30 – 4 pm, lots of time in the day to keep the three ladies happy with a visit to the Dubai Outlet mall.

But first was breakfast and for that we needed to get up ! The jet leg was hitting me today and our sleep patterns were all out of wack, me and Nita were up at around 4am. Then I nodded off again around 5. Kids slept through but getting up was proving difficult. (It was not until the morning of the 13th that I was able to sleep continually post 6am).
Managed to get ourselves down to the buffet just past 9am.

DSC01743

The buffet looked nice, got our table and then we realised we were missing Pooja! Nita was “where did she go, she was right here with us!!!”, finally spotted her – she was already at the buffet getting her Pancakes! the stark difference from the last vacation, kids were no longer needing handholding for everything, they were now looking after themselves more (still more would be welcome Winking smile ).

IMG_8587IMG_8589

Now to head over to the Dubai outlet mall, be warned it is 30 min ride by Taxi from our hotel. Arrived there around 10am, place was still very very emtpy and stores were only just opening. Lots of stores but there seemed to be no real bargains, was normal prices! Made a round of the place and was not impressed by it at all. Would rather spend this time at the bigger malls. Ladies were over this place and around 11 am we took a taxi to the Mall of Emirates.

Recommendation: Avoid the Dubai Outlet Mall

Arrived at the Mall of Emirates just before midday, the second biggest mall in here after Dubai mall. Now this place was buzzing.

DSC01653DSC01660DSC01661DSC01668

Ladies were having a good time roaming about, fashion shops and Sephora. Pooja was loving the winter jackets with the furs and trying on new things for kicks! I was like, that is not for Brisbane weather – NOT GETTING IT!

IMG_3183IMG_3185

It was close to 1pm, time to get some lunch, could not go past PF Changs – fell in love with that place during our US visit in 2015. Ordered some amazing Sushi (cannot remember the name  Sad smile ), fried rice and Chicken Kung Pau. The mains were good, but when compared with the amazing food we had at Buddha bar, this was not quite up to it! Still a good lunch.
(Travel tip: make sure to have a good lunch on the desert safari days, the night safari BBQ food is not that great!)

Headed back to the hotel, for our Desert safari pickup. Quick freshen up and down to the lobby. Had booked our safari with Rayna Tours, car arrived a bit late, post 4pm, now the long drive out of Dubai to the meeting point.
It is amazing to see the vast level of construction still taking place in Dubai. Pooja was still perplexed with sand being everywhere – this is a desert after all!
IMG_8599IMG_8601IMG_8602

Got to the meeting point, chance for a quick water break. Nita opted for the fresh Coconut water.
The local vendors were trying to sell me Keffiyeh (the arabian head cloth). Tried it on as did Neha and Pooja – it looked great! Time for some price haggling, was able to get it to well below half of what he had started with.
Now we were ready for the Arabian desert!

IMG_8604IMG_8605IMG_8608IMG_8615

Back in the 4wd, drove a further 5 mins, to switch to another driver and car – apparently our driver did not have license to go into the desert and these guys used specialist drivers who simply drove around in the desert.
Could tell this car was more for the Safari, it had internal roll bars – just incase!! Everyone was asked to put on the seat belts, got Neha seated in front, that was the best view for her VLOG.

Safari ride was great! Lots of bumps, slides, the car being at some crazy angles – we were rolling, and then at the last moment the car seems to take control again !! It was an amazing experience, Neha and Pooja absolutely loved it.

There was a short stop over for some quick pics in the desert – unfortunately these guys now seem to commercialised and not the same personal touch, it was out for some very quick snaps then back in the car again – this is a big let down and voting down Rayna Tours for that!

DSC01688DSC01691DSC01695DSC01697

It was then off to the Desert Camp for some Camel riding, dinner and shows.

DSC01704DSC01706DSC01709DSC01712DSC01714DSC01715DSC01718DSC01720DSC01724DSC01731DSC01735DSC01736DSC01741

The camp was big, with lots of areas for pics, henna – which Pooja directly went to, food stalls, shisha bars and lots more. Shows were nice followed by dinner and belly dance. Food was not that great – as expected, but other than that, the camp was not too bad.

Overall it was not the same feel as what we had 11 years back, this was now much more commercialised! Highlight was the sand bashing in the 4WD, kids absolutely loved it!Would I recommend Rayna tours – most likely not.

Day 1–Dubai

Got to our hotel, the Novotel Suites (Mall of Emirates) just after 8:15am,

DSC01673DSC01674

Unfortunately luck was not on our side, due to all rooms being fully booked out the night before, our room was not available till midday :(. Nothing much could be done, stored the bags at the hotel and off to the Mall of Emirates – great we were super close to this place. Got there around 9:15 am and realised most shops in Dubai do not open till 10am, did manage to find a couple of coffee shops open, time for some breaky and much needed coffee – it had been close to 16 hours since we left Brisbane. Settled for the North 28 coffee shop – looking onto the Ski fields in the mall – Neha & Pooja could not believe it, a ski field in a desert country!!

IMG_8670IMG_8671
The Breakfast menu was not extensive but it did have something for all of us, Pooja ordered pancakes and a caramel shake – something about Caramel and Pooja – inseparable ! Neha got the Eggs benedict and settled for the special Hot Chocolate. Me and Nita were having the Avocado toast, a tea and latte.
The shake and hot chocolate arrived and both looked very impressive! Pooja was “omg is this a shake !!”

IMG_3119IMG_3122IMG_8527

IMG_3126

Food review:

Drinks: The Shake was 5 star! Hot Chocolate was more for show, was not up to it, My latte and tea were nice.
Food: Pancakes were dry and lacking taste. Eggs Benedict was brilliant – had the best hollandaise sauce, and the Avocado toast was good.

By the time we finished it was past 10 am and the mall was coming to life.
Next was roaming the mall of emirates – an vast array of shops and brands I have not seen or heard off. From my perspective, it was just another mall just larger! However for Nita and Neha this was heaven!!

IMG_3131IMG_E8532

We were still tired from lack of sleep and there is only soo much walking around you can do, got back to the hotel just after midday, room was ready! Room was very good, two beds on either side of the room with a living area in the middle, this was a great place if coming with a family and you want to avoid two rooms.
A warm shower was heaven and it was then time to hit the bed for some much needed rest. I put an alarm for 5pm and was soo glad it was there, it only seemed like a few minutes, the alarm was sounding and it was already 5pm!! Was time to drag the kids out of bed – always a task with Pooja! Had to make the most of each evening at Dubai, tonight we had a booking at the Buddha Bar, near Dubai Marina.
Whilst girls were getting ready, I headed down to the events/tour desk to book things for the next few days. Sorted out the Desert Safari, Bollywood theme Park, Burj Khalifa top viewing & Abu Dhabi visit, so now that was all taken care of, I could plan my ladies shopping around that!
Back in the room, girls were ready to go, bring on Dubai nights.

Taxi to the Marina took a bit longer then expected due to traffic, still made it earlier then our booking, enough time to walk around and take in the Dubai nights. Night time at the Marina is very nice. Lots of restaurants trying to lure potential customers in, kids were like “why are they forcing us to come in and eat there….”.

DSC01534DSC01540DSC01550DSC01573DSC01574DSC01576

After a walk around the place, it was time for Buddha Bar, impressive from the outside but more so from the inside!

DSC01554DSC01559DSC01597DSC01602DSC01613DSC01637DSC01639DSC01646DSC01580DSC01587DSC01592DSC01601

This was an amazing experience, so glad we got a booking to this (had to book 3 months in advance for a Sat night booking!). All dimly lit, intimate ambience, highly recommended.
Food was very good, we ordered the home made Shrimp Dim Sims – Pooja’s favourite and she was eating that with Chop Sticks, thanks to her Jitesh Mama and Aaja for teaching her that skill in Fiji recently. Next was the Indonesian Fried Rice, Singapore Chilli Prawns and Chicken Kung Pao – all very good dishes, although could have been a bit more spicy. Overall a great experience, great first night in Dubai.

Day 0.5 – Flight from Brisbane to Dubai

Had been looking forward to this holiday for close to an year now! Was finally here.
Friday 8th Dec, finished off work early and was home around 2:30pm.
Now it was mad rush to finalise all packings, these holidays I could not get myself pre-organised with travel packing and left everything to the last day.
Pooja was super happy to see me, her face could not hide her excitement, few weeks back she was on a whinging daily plan of complaining, how the holidays were too far and may never come, and now it was d-day! She already had 3 weeks off in Fiji for Diwali and apparently that was not enough!
Veer was at our place and seeing all the bags, he was getting excited along with the girls about the travels. All packed and luggage in the car by 6pm, then off to mums place for Dinner. Mum made Neha’s fav  – Gosht curry!

Quick dinner, then mum & dad along with Veer drove us to the airport. Arrived at the airport and Pooja had already nodded off, the excitement of travel had sleep deprived her that morning – she was up since 5:30am. Neha and Pooja had a long farewell session with their dadi & Veer, and kept telling their dadi – “ see you soon in Navsari”, this time we would be spending a week with Mum and Dad in Jan at Dad’s hometown in Navsari, Gujarat.

It was about 7:30pm when we got into the Terminal, located the Emirates checkin area and into the queue for a further 20 mins of waiting. Checkin all done, got good seats, 4 in the middle towards the front of the aircraft and away from the toilets!

Immigration was a breeze and in the departure area awaiting for our boarding. The upgraded BNE departure area is very nice, found a nice area to hang around whilst Neha and Pooja were attempting to record their dance sequence – yes in the airport!! The dance sequence was to be part of Neha’s vlogs.

Finally boarded, it was a Boeing 777 – this was home for the next 14.5 hours! Me and Nita were in the middle with the kids on the flanks!
Soon after takeoff, Dinner was served, quality of the meal & service was definitely better than what I have had previously on Qantas and Virgin. Was amazing for me and Nita to see both the girls eating flight meals without whinging, this was never the case before!! The girls had grown! Travelling with older kids was so much easier, we could tell the difference from the last couple of trips :).
2 hours into the flight, Pooja was nodding off, what better way to do that other than lift the armrest and put her feet on my lap. Now she is no longer a small kid, still my baby, but not a small one. Next 4 hours, I was Pooja’s leg rest and could not move :(.
Nita and Neha were both in their sleeps, I continued watching my shows and dosed off in between.

Breakfast was served a couple of hours before landing, time to freshen up. Landed at the Dubai airport, now the long walk to the immigration and baggage claim.

Immigration was easy, got our bags and straight for the Taxi to the hotel.

NEW! Neha has started vlogging and will be creating short clips summarising our travels, will try and insert links to her videos at the end of each of my post, hope you like it. You can easily identify these by the following icon:

New York–20th May Last Day (my 100th blog posts!!!)

Wow! This is my 100th blog post!!100post

Last day today, we were leaving for the airport around 1pm, lazy start to the morning. Packed up our bags, checked out and left the bags with the hotel bell desk.

Last breakfast was at Bouchon Bakery – my fav, along the way, stopped by at Times Square for last sights!

IMG_8515IMG_8517IMG_8519

Arrived at Bouchon Bakery opp Rockefella centre around 11am, time for my fav Chai latte along with their amazing pastries. The Chai latte was so good, had to go for seconds!

IMG_8527IMG_8528

A last minute sight of the Rockefella area.

IMG_8529IMG_8531IMG_8538

Back at our hotel – Riu Plaza,

IMG_8510IMG_8512

, grabbed our bags, our car had arrived, time to head off to JFK, goodbye NYC, you have been awesome and tiring (too much walking) at the same time!

Drive time to JFK was just under an hour, then it was the crazy security queues at the airport – make sure you allow 3 hours, the security queues are soooooo slow!

Flight from NY to LAX was on time, first leg 5.5 hours.

Arrived into LAX 7:30pm, had around 4 hours before the flight home, again more waiting at the security process. NY was bad, but LAX was worse!!

Finally through that, into the departure lounge, we now had just under 2 hrs before our flight home. Time to eat, the fast food options were not too appealing, looked around and stumbled upon a Sushi place which looked ok. Turned out to be the BEST sushi we have had, even better than Natsumi!

IMG_1124

Refueled, headed to the gates. Browsing on FB, noticed Kapila was also checked into the LAX terminal, left her message on her post stating I was also there – most probably she had already left.
Few minutes later, Kapila was there! Small world.

IMG_8542

Was good catching up with her, she had been to Orlando for the wedding and was also on her way back home.

Bid her farewell and bid USA farewell, long flight back home, this had been a GREAT holiday without kids, thanks to mum & dad, Bhavik & Tina, for taking care of our girls – now the hard part – getting back to reality!

Till our next holiday…….

New York–19th May

Today was a visit to Queens. The objective was to find Twinkies!, had been on the lookout for these in Manhattan with no luck, ringing around had located them at Target, the closest one close to a subway station was in Queens!

Took the yellow line Subway from 42nd to 63 Dr-Rego Park. First stop was Rego Park mall, Nita wanted to visit the Ulta Cosmetic branch. Whilst she was there, I headed up to Century 21, this was a much better store than the one on Broadway! Found some great things for the girls, waited for Nita to get there and we ended up getting loads of things for them all. Century 21 is brilliant, loads of branded goodies at outlet prices! We stayed there for over 2 hours and came out with both our hands full of shopping bags Disappointed smile.

Next stop was Target @ Queens Place, time to get Twinkies. Grabbed the last few from the shelves. Unlike our Target in AUS, Target in US has a supermarket side of things, selling all groceries items along with the clothes. The concept was great, however what was not so great was their service – absolutely rubbish, checkout operators here had no sense of urgency, they would have to be the SLOWEST I have ever experienced, much much slower than even the trainees in AUS. Finally managed to make our way out of the checkout. Time for a quick walk around the place, then made our way back to the subway and headed back to Manhattan.

Got off at 49st station, it was already 3:30pm and still had not had lunch. Decided to head to Natsumi for the brilliant dumplings and sushi we had tried on our first night.

Natsumi on 50th st, best place for Dumplings and Sushi.

Late lunch done, then off to the Hotel, dumped the shopping and time for a afternoon break.

Around 6 pm we headed out again, Nita wanted to experience the Brooklyn Bridge view and Manhattan skyline view once more for the last time – off to the Kal Ho Na Ho park under Brooklyn Bridge, a good spot to experience peace in the concrete jungle.

Today was more crowded, there were a couple of models having their photo-shoots done, was interesting watching the process and how they managed to change clothes in the openWinking smile!

Time for our own pics

Headed off around 8pm, subway to Macy’s on Herald Square, had to take back my Dockers Pants, sales person had not taken off the security tags!

Got off at 34th St and made our way to Macy’s, it was a brilliant night sky with the full moon next to the Empire State Building – what a view!

Finished off Macy’s, back down the Subway and off to 42nd st, then a short walk to Utsav on 46th st. Last night in NYC, time for some good indian!

Nice interior, had to only wait 5 minutes before we were given a table. Ordered their spicy variety – was super!

A very good meal at Utsav – highly recommended. Get the Chicken Chettinand HOT, so so so tasty!

Last dinner in NY was done, now for the last night in Times Square, Nita had to finish off her challenge set by Daljit & Sanil, the challenge was to dance Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in Times Square!

Very proud of Nita, she was able to perform the dubsmash of PRDP in two takes and then it was on her instagram – challenge completed, apparently now it was Daljit’s turn to do the same on Harbour Bridge – I am waiting for that!

Nita totally embarrassed from her live performance in front of the massive crowd in Times Square, now it was time for our nightly Cheesecake fix @ Juniors, this was the best way to finish the night.

New York–18th May

Most of the sights were now done, today was a leisurely walk down 5th Ave. The tour guides had highlighted this street as a must walk, with lots to see. During the tour yesterday we had noticed a good coffee shop in the vicinity of 56th st, decided to start our day from there, breakfast pastry at Tisserie – 7th Ave between 56 & 55th st.
Walking past Times Square, good opportunity for some more pics!

Made our way to 7th Ave to the Tisserie Bakery place. The pastries and coffees were both very good here. One problem I have found in NY or US for that matter, is finding good breakfast that we are so used to from back in AUS. Breakfast here seems to be massive, greasy and just not that nicely put together.
What we did find was the amazing pastries, these were better than back home, and we made that our breakfast start!

Refuelled, now off to 5th Ave, it was time to explore the place, and the best way to do that was on foot!

Passed some interesting streets and even more interesting eating places. We were quite a way from Times Square, and here the eating out places were where locals went – the GOOD places!
Found one such place , on 57th st, between 6th and 5th ave – Mangia. The place inside had everything to eat, the front had a coffee area with pastries and ready to go subs/sandwiches, walk further in and there was big buffet serving area, then further on the sides were a-la-carte – Italian, Mexican etc, and the place was busy – it was 12:30, and locals were getting in for lunch. We grabbed a coffee and another pastry, had to try at all these places! Coffees on this side of town was soo much better than near Times Square!

Finally made it onto 5th Ave, now to walk all the way down!

It was already past 2pm and we had only managed to the 40th st, still a long way to go. Time for a lunch break, opened up YELP and located a highly rated Schezuan place just around the corner. We were there in less than 5 minutes – was so nice to take a seat, legs were in need of much required rest!

Ordered their KangPao and Chilli Garlic Chicken, unfortunately food was not as good as we had expected, Nita only had a small bit – well you cannot always win Sad smile.

Back on the street, more street scape to take in, it was around 5:30pm before we reached Union Square. Noticed a Max Brenner around the corner! Time for a much needed rest.

Unlike the Max Brenner in AUS, this place served proper food as well as the chocolate fix. Ordered a Chicken Pesto Pizza, Nita had a much needed mocha, I settled for a coke. Food here was very good, very impressed with them.

Legs got some much needed rest, it was now close to 6:30pm, headed out and down to the Union Sq subway station, took the yellow line to High St Brooklyn. Nita wanted to visit the scene from Kal Ho Na Ho, where they are looking onto Manhattan skyline. This was a small park beneath the Brooklyn Bridge on Brooklyn side.

Getting out from High St station, it was only a short walk to the park we wanted. Passed some amazing Brick Oven pizza places with long queues. Made a note of these, hopefully I could make it there.

Finally made it to the place where Nita wanted to visit, yep the same location as in the movie Kal Ho Na Ho! This place did provide a lovely view of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan.

A very nice vantage point to see Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge, highly recommended.

Great spot to view Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge

Finished off after 8:30pm, got the subway back to Times Square (42nd St). Did not feel like dinner due to the late Pizza at Max Brenner.  Decided to do takeout Cheesecake from Juniors and simply relax in our room.

Pizza cafe – NY style!

Had been a long day – feet were killing us but we had covered lots today! Time to enjoy the cheesecake.
Tomorrow was a visit to Queens, chance to see a different side of NY Surprised smile.
