Day 7 (1/4)–SF to Vegas

Early start today, bags all packed up, kids ready and breakfast fed, shuttle arrived at 8:40am, all loaded in, farewell San Francisco & Fisherman’s Wharf, we had a great time here, now bring on Vegas.

Arrived at the Airport in good time, checked-in without issues, then headed in to departures. Security was very strict, shoes, belts all had to be removed, the queue was very long and it was a slow process going through. Finally made it to the other side, off to the gates, stopped by a Café for a coffee and quick breakfast croissant. Whilst we were having a light snack, kids were busy on their i-devices!!!

IMG_3089
(kids with their i-devices, where is real communication!!)

Had to go through the typical Southwest boarding process, we were in group C, therefore had the last pick of seats. By the time we entered the aircraft, most of the rows of empty seats were gone, we were however lucky to find double seats at the rear. Flight took off on time @ 11:15am, arrived in Las Vegas @ 12:45 pm.

Getting off the aircraft, first thing we notice next to the gates were the rows of slot machines, me and Vik had to get on to that first, let us open our gambling account from the word go. Only used $1 in the slots and ended up with $5. Kids were getting impatient, collected my BIG winnings and headed down to baggage claim.

IMG_9817

Vegas airport baggage claim is in another terminal connected by monorail, had to use that to arrive at the baggage claim hall where more slot machines awaited us.

DSC08445DSC08446DSC08448

Oh Dear!!!

Lining up to collect our bags, I realised my carryone luggage was missing, this had my passports, cash and our booking documentation!! This was the scariest feeling I have ever had on any trip, could not believe I had forgotten the bag at the slot machine near the gate we arrived at! I also could not simply go back, we were now out of the quarantine zone, required me to go back through departures security screening. Headed to the Southwest counter where the guys assisted me with a temp pass to get through security. Ran across to departures, security took a while and for some reason the guys thought I was the ideal candidate for a full security check, all this while, I am super nervous about my bag going missing! Finally through, then onto the monorail to the gates another anxious couple of minutes wait, what a relief when I saw my carryon still there where I had been playing slots about 10 minutes back! All my belongings were intact, lucky no one had picked it up, this was my super lucky day. Back the baggage claim, Nita and Meeta were in tears, everyone had been super nervous and now happy that the bag was found, it would have been a disaster if this one had gone missing – an important lesson learned. Those documents are going to be very close to me from now on.

After all that drama, time to get our shuttle to the hotel, I had booked a private shuttle to our hotel, turns out the word PRIVATE is just for kicks, the shuttle company had us waiting with other shuttle passengers that were to be serviced by mini buses. I would recommend anyone coming to Vegas, to not book a shuttle beforehand and simply organise one at the airport, there are loads and a quick couple of minutes survey would indicate which ones were providing the best service.
Shuttle finally came around, reached our hotel “the Cosmopolitan” around 2:30pm. This was a nice place. Got our interconnecting rooms on the 30th floor. Into the rooms, quick freshening up, time to hit the road.

DSC08478DSC08484DSC08498DSC08502
(at the Cosmopolitan)

Outside the hotel, we realised how central this was, it was between the Bellagio, New York New York and Planet Hollywood. Quick hop across the walkway to McDonalds – kids were sorted! And it was COLD outside, I was expecting summer, but the breeze was COLD, more long sleeve and jackets to be worn.

The first stop of the day, M&M and COKE worlds.

DSC08508DSC08510

M&M world was great, had a chance to pack lots of different M&M’s, saw a 4D M&M movie. Pooja was enjoying this place with all the M&M goodies, she helped me pack up the different M&M colours from the massive towers.

DSC08525DSC08528DSC08538DSC08546

Next stop COKE world, loads of Coke memorabilia. We tried the 16 coke flavours from across the globe, was interesting but not trying that again – Pooja was adamant we do that, her teacher had told her this was a good experience!

DSC08521DSC08557

Next stop was Javiers Mexican restaurant at the Aria resort. This one was recommended as fine Mexican dining. Pooja was feeling off and did not have anything. The ambience was very nice, however the food was just average, nothing to rave about except for the price, too $$$ for average food.

DSC08570DSC08573DSC08578DSC08584DSC08585DSC08588DSC08589

DSC08597DSC08603DSC08624DSC08628

Out of Aria, it was nightfall and the Vegas lights were in full swing, Neha and Pooja were loving the multicoloured neon lights everywhere. They were however having mixed thoughts about the place being “inappropriate”, with bikini ladies doing table dancing at casinos and people handing our girl cards to everyone! Well that is Vegas and it really is not a place for kids.

DSC08664DSC08675DSC08681DSC08692DSC08700DSC08704DSC08711

Got back to the hotel, kids were exhausted from walking, Pooja was still feeling flu’ish and having a slight temperature, the Nurofen was not working, tomorrow we needed to go see a doctor, I needed her well for Disney.

Day 6 (31/3)– SF Shopping & Dinner with Nickesh

Our last full day in San Francisco,  today the ladies joined us for the morning walk, another glorious cold morning.

IMG_9769IMG_3070IMG_3072IMG_3080IMG_9772IMG_9782IMG_9797

IMG_3084IMG_3085

Morning walk ended at Pier 39, time for Breakfast @ Eagles Café, the food was great but the serving sizes were enormous, we could have shared a plate between two! Americans love their big meals.

IMG_9798IMG_9800IMG_9802IMG_9805

Back at the hotel, kids were just waking up, Pooja and Neha were already whinging about the amount of walking being done, the cold weather and walking was exhausting for them, Pooja was also showing signs of flu with a slight temperature, she was in no mood to go out, and wanted to stay in the hotel and play with her new Disney dolls.

IMG_3088
(washing up time)

Decided to let kids stay in, Nita & Meeta headed off to Union Square by themselves to cover off the remaining shopping, this time they used the street cars to get to Union Square, apparently much easier than cable cars, much less crowd! Me and Vik were on kids duties, made sure they had a good lunch, were all in good mood. Kids wanted to stay@ the hotel today, left them all in our room except for Aaria, she wanted her mum. Kids did have a mobile so we could stay in touch with them. They were having a ball at the hotel, playing games, watching TV and NO WALKING!!!
Me, Vik and Aaria headed off to Union Square later on to catch-up with the ladies.

Met up with them at our fav location – Cheesecake factory, since we had a big breakfast this morning, decided to skip lunch and go direct for desserts @ around 3pm.

DSC08399DSC08401DSC08402
(cheesecakes for lunch @ The Cheesecake Factory)

Evening plan was meeting up Nickesh, Hinal, Jay and Reena @ DOSA. We had asked him to take us to a good Indian restaurant.
Back at the hotel, Pooja still had a slight temperature, loaded her with more drugs, got all sorted and headed out. Google was godsend on my iPhone, had worked out from that our best route to take to get to the DOSA place @ Fillmore. Utilising our MUNI pass, we used the local bus with one changeover and were at the place in around 40 minutes.

I was expecting a CHAAT place (from the DOSA name), but it was something totally different, Nickesh had selected something to surprise us. The ambience was unlike any other indian restaurant. Very classy, top service and brilliant food. These guys made spicy food without us requesting it, and it was amazing!

DSC08404DSC08405DSC08406DSC08407DSC08409DSC08410DSC08411DSC08412DSC08415DSC08420DSC08426DSC08428

We had some amazing dishes, including Shikampuri Kebab Sliders, Hyderbadi Lamb Chops, Prawn Masala, Peppercorn Chicken & Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani – all mouth watering dishes. We were enjoying the food and the company so much that we did not realise Nickesh had already paid the bill, me and Vik were not too impressed with ourselves! It was a wonderful and memorable final night for us in SF. Had the best time with my Kalyan US cousins/spouses, thanks Nickesh for a great night!

Back to the hotel to pack up for tomorrows flight to Vegas.

Day 5 (30/3)- SF Alcatraz & Other sights

Today was Alcatraz visit, ferry terminal was a short 15 minute walk from our hotel. Clear and cold morning, the weather was holding on well for us.

We were booked on the 9:15am ferry, were very surprised to see the swarm of people already there, I had thought we were going to be the first few. Am glad we had pre-booked the tickets from Brisbane, most of the tickets to the morning ferry were already sold out.

DSC08083DSC08084DSC08085DSC08091

Ferry ride was a short 10 minutes, provided us with great views of the bay bridge and the surrounds. Stepping outside on the ferry to view these great sights was COLD, the outside breeze was very chilly, but definitely worth it.

DSC08096DSC08126DSC08110DSC08118DSC08119DSC08123

On the rock, we quickly got around to exploring the place, wanted to get to the cell blocks fast. Was a bit of a walk uphill.

DSC08132DSC08137DSC08141

Finally at the main prison cell.

DSC08147DSC08148

So far it had been fun and we were expecting the same, however behind the prison doors the experience was to be very different.
Stepping through the main doors, we found our selves in the main shower area for prisoners, no privacy, simply rows of showerheads with cold water. DSC08151

Next we each got the audio tour headsets, these were great, you tailor the audio tour to your pace and it walked us through the entire cell and its amenities with sound effects that allowed us to feel the prison environment. The guided commentary gave a very good impression of being in Alcatraz. Towards the end, the feeling inside us was not happy at all – Americas hardest prison on the doorstep of San Francisco. Great tour and experience, but I would not be taking that tour again, it had sucked out all the happy feelings out of us by the end of the tour.

DSC08157DSC08159DSC08161DSC08167DSC08171DSC08175DSC08179DSC08212DSC08213

Some great views outside the administration building on Alcatraz

DSC08205DSC08218DSC08216
(some interesting facts on prisoner counts!)

Time to get off the island, we had enough of the not so happy feelings, now to go back to the brighter side of holidays!

Rainforest Café & Aaria’s 6th Birthday
Back at Pier, short walk to Fishermans Wharf, we headed for the Rainforest café for lunch. This place had a jungle themed restaurant, with a variety of wild animated animals. Kids enjoyed this place. It was also Aaria’s 6th birthday today, good place to celebrate that. Pooja and Neha had already picked a Disney gift for her. Food here was average, nothing to rave about or recommend, a one off visit is enough.

DSC08227DSC08229DSC08239DSC08241DSC08251DSC08256DSC08259

Ghirardelli
No stop to San Francisco is complete without a stop over at the famous Ghirardelli chocolate & Ice Cream store. Having just had lunch, ice cream sundaes were missed, but the chocolate tasting was devine!

DSC08263DSC08264DSC08266DSC08267

Lombard St (Crooked Street)

Next stop was Lombard street, do the crooked street walk. The cable car turntable (starting station) was directly next to Ghirardelli, however the queue there was toooooo long, possibly a wait of around 2 hours! We noticed all the cars leaving the station were not fully loaded with people, they were leaving a few seats empty for other station pickups. Decided to take a short walk to the next station and board the cable car from there, and was that a good move! No queues there and got on the next car with ease. After a steep climb up Hyde St, got off at the Lombard street stop. Very cold and windy up here, and loads of people. Did the crooked street walk all the way down and up. Was very nice to see the houses on the street with there car ports and small entry’s on to lombard street.

(hurray, completed the Crooked Street!!)

DSC08377

China Town

Next stop was China Town, however getting on to the cable car from lombard street station was proving to be very difficult, all cars were packed and no one was getting off, after trying the next 5 cars unsuccessfully, resorted to Cabs and were on our way to the famous SF China town. A bit of a let down it was, not that impressed.

DSC08384DSC08386DSC08388

By this stage we were close to Union Square, ladies could not help visit more shops, shopping always seems to revive the female species !!!
Dinner was decided for Italian again, head back to Columbus street, we were in love with that place. We were lucky with the cable car getting out of union square, but it required a few of us to be standing on the outside, I was with Pooja and Nita was with Neha on the other side. Neha finally got to stand on the outside and hang out.

IMG_9754IMG_9756
IMG_9763IMG_9765

Arrived at Columbus street and decided to try the Calzone restaurant, this one was noticed yesterday. Food was very good, but could not surpass Mona Lisa! Garlic fries were wow!

DSC08398DSC08391DSC08393DSC08394DSC08395DSC08396

Got two cabs back to our hotel, was a great long day, we had covered lots today!

Day 4 (29/3)–SF Union Square

6:30 am start today, Vikash dragged me out for an early morning walk/jog around the Fishermans Wharf bay area. Crisp chilly morning outside, around 14 degrees C, there was a slight breeze which made it feel even colder! Good walk & jog was just what we needed, the last few days were simply full of eating & drinking, something to offset all that indulgence.
The views to Golden Gate & Alcatraz in the morning light were wow.

IMG_3034IMG_3035IMG_3036IMG_3037

Back at the hotel, time to get everyone else organised, breaky and out the door. Today was Union Square day, shopping for the ladies Sad smile! Headed out on beach street to the Hyde Street Cable Car Turntable. Got the three day MUNI passes, these were great, allowing travel on all Cable Cars, Street Cars and Buses – we had lots to cover and this worked out great for us.

Had to wait around 30 minutes before we got onto the next cable car. Could not figure out why they were not utilizing all the cable cars and increasing the frequency, it seemed to be scheduled at 15 minute intervals, only accommodating around 20-30 people at a time. Were lucky to get the outside seats, me and Vikash were standing on the outsides holding the columns! This would never be allowed back home!

The ride was fun, lots of steep hills up & down. Standing on the outside was definitely the highlight. The entire experience of holding on without any safety harnesses was brilliant, I wish they had similar experiences at home. The Cable Car drivers were also adding to the experience, the train bells were being rung to a RAP tune, it was simply brilliant.
There was also not much room between the passing cars, literally around 100 cms or less, but when you are standing outside, it feels more like 10 cms!! Too close but lots of fun.

Last stop Union Square.
DSC07964

Union Square is San Francisco’s central shopping & theatre district spanning several blocks. Lots of people, the place is buzzing!

DSC08003

(Union square – San Francisco)

First stop – Cheesecake Factory, time for Brunch.

The queues here are big, wait time for us was around 30 minutes, which apparently is about standard!

Finally got a table for 8. Menu was extensive which did make the ordering process harder. Pooja had to have the waffles and milk shake, Nita ordered Benedict, and I settled for an Omelet. Food presentation according to our MKR panel was mediocre, however the taste was up there Smile

Next, time for ladies to hit the shopping areas. We split up, Pooja & Dian tagged along with me and Vik.

Pooja somehow managed to track down a Disney store, and that meant time for me to open her account of toys! More dolls of course!

In the Westfield mall @ Union Square, saw for the first time a Microsoft store!! , that was very cool. Got a good chance play around with their gadgets. Pooja & Dian had located a giant touchscreen (around 42”) loaded with games which kept them busy.

DSC08046DSC08045

It was already a couple of hours now, and boredom was hitting us, needed a coffee, settled for Starbucks which unfortunately was the best available around the place. Coffee was medicore. However not all was bad, they provided wireless iphone charging stations at the tables. It simply required plugging in the provided dongle on the iphone and placing that at the correct position on the counter top, very ingenious!

DSC08047
(charging station for my iphone @ Starbucks)

DSC08048DSC08050
(Yoda @ Union Square)

Met up with the ladies @ Union Square park area, they still had lots to be covered, and the kids were becoming restless, except for Neha who was enjoying her time with Nita. Me and Vik decided to head back to the hotel with the kids, and meet up with the ladies later for dinner. Back to the Trams took the Market Street tram to Fishermans Wharf. Aaria, Pooja & Dian had a good time riding it.

DSC08055

Around 7pm, we left the hotel, rendezvous with the ladies was at Mona Lisa Italian restaurant in North Beach, recommended by Nickesh.
Time for Tram again, got off at North Beach requiring only short walk. Arriving at Columbus Ave, we were WOW, this place is all about Italian restaurants, lines and lines of em!
Found Mona Lisa, a gem of a place, not big but with lots of character. They had a MINI parked outside, converted to a table for two!

IMG_3062

Ladies comes over soon after, by this time, Pooja and Aaria being so tired had dozed off. The guys at the restaurant were very accommodating with them allowing us extra chairs for them to lie on!
Food was the best I had tasted. The best dishes of the night were the Salmon Risotta & Marinara.

Day 3 (28/3)– Great Mall Outlet Shopping & Dinner at Bhupen Kaka’s

Was initially planned to be only one day with our Kalyan family, however Pushpa Kaki & Bharti kaki were insistent on another day, could not say no.

Rajend kaka & Pushpa kaki arrived at the hotel @ 9:30 am to collect us all. Next stop there home, than Nickesh & Hinal were taking us to the Great Mall – outlet shopping place.

Great Mall was a further 40 minutes drive south from Nickesh’s place, reached there around midday.
The place is big, lots of good shopping, and soon Pooja was whinging with all the walking. Stopped by at a good bakery/café and recharged with some yum pastry and tea. Hinal recommended the Creamy French roll, thumbs up to that!

Finished off at the mall around 6:30pm, by this stage, we had loads of bags, Aaria’s stroller was coming in handy, not for carrying her but for holding our shopping!!

It was then off to Bharti Kaki’s place for dinner. Being Ram Nomi, Bharti kaki had homemade fish and chips on the menu Smile, girls were loving it.
Shared more interesting stories with Bhupen Kaka & Rajend Kaka, always fun hearing it from them, too many stories and not enough time!

Day 2 (27/3) – SF Sightseeing with Nickesh & Dinner at Rajend Kaka’s place

Today my cousin Nickesh Kalyan was showing us around the sights. Getting up early was the difficult bit for all of us, the long flight and lack of sleep was affecting us all, we somehow managed to drag ourselves out of bed and head out for breakfast around the corner @ iHOP. The place was a classic American Pancake diner. Pancakes were good, lots of variety, but nothing fantastic.

Nickesh was at the hotel around 9:20 am, was really good to meet him again, last we met was in India in 2011, and that was only a short catch-up. Lucky they had a big car – Chevrolet Suburban with 9 seats!, worked out well for our group of 8.

IMG_9700IMG_9702

First stop was the Golden Gate Bridge, unfortunately the weather was not too favourable, it was very foggy, and only lower part of the Golden gate was visible. Still amazing seeing this magnificent structure. Time for golden gate snaps.

And walking onto the bridge, this is one big structure

Next stop was the Palace of Fine Arts. Nickesh tells us this place is where lots of wedding and bollywood photoshoot takes place. Being not to be outdone, we had to do some impromptu Photo shots.

After imitating many bollywood poses, it was time to head off to Lombard St (the crooked street). Driving through it, kids could not believe how crooked the street was, lots of sharp turns! Place was very clean and well maintained, considering the number of people that go through this section of Lombard St!

DSC07817DSC07820

It was now time to head out of city area and off to Berkeley. We had asked Nickesh to take us to a good lunch venue, it was to be Viks Chaat Place! How fitting, Vikash.

It was proving a bit difficult getting there with San Francisco traffic, well that is what I thought, however Nickesh tells me that it was normal for these traffic delays! Urrg I could not handle the traffic on a daily basis.
Going through the city centre, Nick pointed out the new ingenious method of setting up food stations via mobile vans! In this case it was a new Indian station, Curry Up Now, and the queue on that station was LONG!

DSC07833

Enroute to Lunch, we crossed the Bay Bridge, another amazing piece of engineering, connecting San Francisco to Oakland.

Finally arrived at our lunch venue, this place was good with a very good menu range of veg and non veg. For all future travellers, the fusion menu is only available on weekends. We ordered a bit of everything, had to try em all! Taste was fantastic.

Lunch done, now time for some desi-dessert. Meeta and I were onto Khulfi. Dian and Pooja had the Ghulub Jamun, and Vik had sorted out a range of sweets, all tasted perfect! Very good.

Next off to Roopam Saree shop. Awaiting for us there was Pushpa Kaki (Nickesh’s mum), she was there to assist Nita and Meeta in selecting the indian wear! Was wonderful to meet her after 29 years! Last time I met her was in 1986  she was and is as wonderful as ever!

Whilst the ladies were doing desi-shopping, Nickesh assisted me and Vik in organising SIM cards for our phones. We got a great plan, $40 USD for unlimited voice, sms and 2.5 gb of data. This would be more than enough for our 3 weeks stay.

Post shopping around 4:30pm, it was off to Nickesh’s home, tonight dinner was at their place. Pushpa kaki had called in all my foi’s to her place for dinner, allowing me to meet them all in the shortest time frame Smile.

It was a great Nite, meeting lots family members and most importantly meeting Rajend & Bhupen kaka, Pushpa and Bharti kaki, Hinal, Nickesh and kids. The happy mood all around was also showing in the bar, we going through lots of alcohol Winking smile!
Kaki had prepared BBQ chicken and mamna for Dinner, yumm.

Lots of eating, drinking and catching up! Neha was referring to Rajend kaka as “American Dada”, as to not confuse with her Dada from Brisbane, she had taken a massive liking to the entire US Kalyan family to the point she was very upset to be coming back to the hotel and kept nagging me to cancel my booking and move into the Kalyan family residence!

Pushpa kaki and Rajend kaka drove us back to hotel post midnight. It had been a wonderful day with Nickesh and an even more amazing nite with our US family. Thanks sooo much for making it so very special for us.

Day 1–Start of Holiday

It was finally here, Neha & Pooja were super excited up at 5am. Had planned to meet at the Airport @ 7am. check-in, immigration was uneventful other than the slow speed @ Brisbane, it seems to be getting worse!

Buying dutyfree was interesting, I had enquired beforehand on how to carryon dutyfree alcohol if also travelling via a domestic flight transfer. Essentially if the alcohol was placed in Secure Temper Evident Bags (STEB), then carrying them on US domestic flights was ok. Well this information was being contested by the sales girl who was 100% sure based on her numerous travels to US that it was not possible and the alcohol would be confiscated. After numerous checks on the websites, I decided to purchase the dutyfree and get it packed in the STEB. Well it worked fine and there was NO issue in the US domestic flight, well actually the local domestic providers were not even aware of the rule which was on their own website!! For all travellers to US, you can buy alcohol dutyfree and take it as carry on in a domestic flight as long as the bottles are in a STEB and the bag is not damaged.

Quick breakfast @ Windmill Café in the departures lounge, this place is very good! Nothing like Beer breakfast Smile

On the flight, we had two 4 row seats, kids were in one and we took the other, well that did not last too long, the shuffling started soon after. By the end, everyone had changed seats including the adults! Flight was LOOOONG, and it was a relief to finally land @ LAX.

Out of immigration, collected our bags then off to Southwest Airlines to transfer onto San Francisco. Landed in San Francisco close to 2pm.

IMG_9655

Getting out of the arrivals hall, we could definitely see the American difference by the size of the cars that were there, everything is BIGGER!! The UTEs were bigger, the Cars bigger, the shuttle buses were bigger, could definitely see the “American Muscle” attitude in the vehicles.

Drivetime to our Hotel @ Fisherman’s Wharf was around 45 minutes, passed some great sights and got to see the Wharf area very well. I had thought the area was small with just one or two piers, the place went for a LOOOONG way, with over 20 piers!
Arrived @ Radisson just after 3 pm, unfortunately the rooms were not ready, apparently in US check-in time is @ 4pm. It was then off for a leisurely walk around the Fisherman’s Wharf area which was literally behind our hotel.

IMG_9660IMG_9663
(Madame Tussauds @ Fishermans Wharf)

4:30pm we were in our rooms, quick shower, freshen up and out again at 6pm, everyone was excited to see the surroundings and make the most of it, Meeta was keeping us on schedule to cover all the sights!
After more than 18 hours of total travel time, the kids were still energetic to get out and see it all.

Some of the highlights…

Dinner was easy, Priya Narsey had recommended the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, food and drinks were both top notch!! This place serves some amazing seafood, everyone including kids stuffed themselves well Smile
Thanks Priya for suggesting that, starting our first US dinner on a very positive note.

Post dinner stepping outside, weather was very very chilly, the bay breezes also did not help. A bit of a change from the Brisbane weather!

30 days and counting……

d-date is just around the corner now, even more pronounced with Pooja maintaining a continuous countdown and making sure everyone around her knows it!!!
Tonight her Taekwondo instructor “John” also mentioned about the holiday and Pooja letting everyone know that we are only 30 days away – I think he is getting a bit irritated and also jealous  😉

All hotels and internal transfers booked, all that is remaining now is the theme park tickets and airport transfers!!

Meeta just informed us of the weather , SF max is 17 degrees C and LA is not much better @ 22 (in April) ! More warm clothes to be packed for the kiddos!! This time we will need to be better prepared than our HongKong 2011 trip.

Now back to counting down, bring on Vegas!!
