Day 4 (29/3)–SF Union Square

6:30 am start today, Vikash dragged me out for an early morning walk/jog around the Fishermans Wharf bay area. Crisp chilly morning outside, around 14 degrees C, there was a slight breeze which made it feel even colder! Good walk & jog was just what we needed, the last few days were simply full of eating & drinking, something to offset all that indulgence.
The views to Golden Gate & Alcatraz in the morning light were wow.

IMG_3034IMG_3035IMG_3036IMG_3037

Back at the hotel, time to get everyone else organised, breaky and out the door. Today was Union Square day, shopping for the ladies Sad smile! Headed out on beach street to the Hyde Street Cable Car Turntable. Got the three day MUNI passes, these were great, allowing travel on all Cable Cars, Street Cars and Buses – we had lots to cover and this worked out great for us.

Had to wait around 30 minutes before we got onto the next cable car. Could not figure out why they were not utilizing all the cable cars and increasing the frequency, it seemed to be scheduled at 15 minute intervals, only accommodating around 20-30 people at a time. Were lucky to get the outside seats, me and Vikash were standing on the outsides holding the columns! This would never be allowed back home!

The ride was fun, lots of steep hills up & down. Standing on the outside was definitely the highlight. The entire experience of holding on without any safety harnesses was brilliant, I wish they had similar experiences at home. The Cable Car drivers were also adding to the experience, the train bells were being rung to a RAP tune, it was simply brilliant.
There was also not much room between the passing cars, literally around 100 cms or less, but when you are standing outside, it feels more like 10 cms!! Too close but lots of fun.

Last stop Union Square.
DSC07964

Union Square is San Francisco’s central shopping & theatre district spanning several blocks. Lots of people, the place is buzzing!

DSC08003

(Union square – San Francisco)

First stop – Cheesecake Factory, time for Brunch.

The queues here are big, wait time for us was around 30 minutes, which apparently is about standard!

Finally got a table for 8. Menu was extensive which did make the ordering process harder. Pooja had to have the waffles and milk shake, Nita ordered Benedict, and I settled for an Omelet. Food presentation according to our MKR panel was mediocre, however the taste was up there Smile

Next, time for ladies to hit the shopping areas. We split up, Pooja & Dian tagged along with me and Vik.

Pooja somehow managed to track down a Disney store, and that meant time for me to open her account of toys! More dolls of course!

In the Westfield mall @ Union Square, saw for the first time a Microsoft store!! , that was very cool. Got a good chance play around with their gadgets. Pooja & Dian had located a giant touchscreen (around 42”) loaded with games which kept them busy.

DSC08046DSC08045

It was already a couple of hours now, and boredom was hitting us, needed a coffee, settled for Starbucks which unfortunately was the best available around the place. Coffee was medicore. However not all was bad, they provided wireless iphone charging stations at the tables. It simply required plugging in the provided dongle on the iphone and placing that at the correct position on the counter top, very ingenious!

Met up with the ladies @ Union Square park area, they still had lots to be covered, and the kids were becoming restless, except for Neha who was enjoying her time with Nita. Me and Vik decided to head back to the hotel with the kids, and meet up with the ladies later for dinner. Back to the Trams took the Market Street tram to Fishermans Wharf. Aaria, Pooja & Dian had a good time riding it.

DSC08055

Around 7pm, we left the hotel, rendezvous with the ladies was at Mona Lisa Italian restaurant in North Beach, recommended by Nickesh.
Time for Tram again, got off at North Beach requiring only short walk. Arriving at Columbus Ave, we were WOW, this place is all about Italian restaurants, lines and lines of em!
Found Mona Lisa, a gem of a place, not big but with lots of character. They had a MINI parked outside, converted to a table for two!

IMG_3062

Ladies comes over soon after, by this time, Pooja and Aaria being so tired had dozed off. The guys at the restaurant were very accommodating with them allowing us extra chairs for them to lie on!
Food was the best I had tasted. The best dishes of the night were the Salmon Risotta & Marinara.

Day 3 (28/3)– Great Mall Outlet Shopping & Dinner at Bhupen Kaka’s

Was initially planned to be only one day with our Kalyan family, however Pushpa Kaki & Bharti kaki were insistent on another day, could not say no.

Rajend kaka & Pushpa kaki arrived at the hotel @ 9:30 am to collect us all. Next stop there home, than Nickesh & Hinal were taking us to the Great Mall – outlet shopping place.

Great Mall was a further 40 minutes drive south from Nickesh’s place, reached there around midday.
The place is big, lots of good shopping, and soon Pooja was whinging with all the walking. Stopped by at a good bakery/café and recharged with some yum pastry and tea. Hinal recommended the Creamy French roll, thumbs up to that!

Finished off at the mall around 6:30pm, by this stage, we had loads of bags, Aaria’s stroller was coming in handy, not for carrying her but for holding our shopping!!

It was then off to Bharti Kaki’s place for dinner. Being Ram Nomi, Bharti kaki had homemade fish and chips on the menu Smile, girls were loving it.
Shared more interesting stories with Bhupen Kaka & Rajend Kaka, always fun hearing it from them, too many stories and not enough time!

Day 2 (27/3) – SF Sightseeing with Nickesh & Dinner at Rajend Kaka’s place

Today my cousin Nickesh Kalyan was showing us around the sights. Getting up early was the difficult bit for all of us, the long flight and lack of sleep was affecting us all, we somehow managed to drag ourselves out of bed and head out for breakfast around the corner @ iHOP. The place was a classic American Pancake diner. Pancakes were good, lots of variety, but nothing fantastic.

Nickesh was at the hotel around 9:20 am, was really good to meet him again, last we met was in India in 2011, and that was only a short catch-up. Lucky they had a big car – Chevrolet Suburban with 9 seats!, worked out well for our group of 8.

IMG_9700IMG_9702

First stop was the Golden Gate Bridge, unfortunately the weather was not too favourable, it was very foggy, and only lower part of the Golden gate was visible. Still amazing seeing this magnificent structure. Time for golden gate snaps.

And walking onto the bridge, this is one big structure

Next stop was the Palace of Fine Arts. Nickesh tells us this place is where lots of wedding and bollywood photoshoot takes place. Being not to be outdone, we had to do some impromptu Photo shots.

After imitating many bollywood poses, it was time to head off to Lombard St (the crooked street). Driving through it, kids could not believe how crooked the street was, lots of sharp turns! Place was very clean and well maintained, considering the number of people that go through this section of Lombard St!

DSC07817DSC07820

It was now time to head out of city area and off to Berkeley. We had asked Nickesh to take us to a good lunch venue, it was to be Viks Chaat Place! How fitting, Vikash.

It was proving a bit difficult getting there with San Francisco traffic, well that is what I thought, however Nickesh tells me that it was normal for these traffic delays! Urrg I could not handle the traffic on a daily basis.
Going through the city centre, Nick pointed out the new ingenious method of setting up food stations via mobile vans! In this case it was a new Indian station, Curry Up Now, and the queue on that station was LONG!

DSC07833

Enroute to Lunch, we crossed the Bay Bridge, another amazing piece of engineering, connecting San Francisco to Oakland.

Finally arrived at our lunch venue, this place was good with a very good menu range of veg and non veg. For all future travellers, the fusion menu is only available on weekends. We ordered a bit of everything, had to try em all! Taste was fantastic.

Lunch done, now time for some desi-dessert. Meeta and I were onto Khulfi. Dian and Pooja had the Ghulub Jamun, and Vik had sorted out a range of sweets, all tasted perfect! Very good.

Next off to Roopam Saree shop. Awaiting for us there was Pushpa Kaki (Nickesh’s mum), she was there to assist Nita and Meeta in selecting the indian wear! Was wonderful to meet her after 29 years! Last time I met her was in 1986  she was and is as wonderful as ever!

Whilst the ladies were doing desi-shopping, Nickesh assisted me and Vik in organising SIM cards for our phones. We got a great plan, $40 USD for unlimited voice, sms and 2.5 gb of data. This would be more than enough for our 3 weeks stay.

Post shopping around 4:30pm, it was off to Nickesh’s home, tonight dinner was at their place. Pushpa kaki had called in all my foi’s to her place for dinner, allowing me to meet them all in the shortest time frame Smile.

It was a great Nite, meeting lots family members and most importantly meeting Rajend & Bhupen kaka, Pushpa and Bharti kaki, Hinal, Nickesh and kids. The happy mood all around was also showing in the bar, we going through lots of alcohol Winking smile!
Kaki had prepared BBQ chicken and mamna for Dinner, yumm.

Lots of eating, drinking and catching up! Neha was referring to Rajend kaka as “American Dada”, as to not confuse with her Dada from Brisbane, she had taken a massive liking to the entire US Kalyan family to the point she was very upset to be coming back to the hotel and kept nagging me to cancel my booking and move into the Kalyan family residence!

Pushpa kaki and Rajend kaka drove us back to hotel post midnight. It had been a wonderful day with Nickesh and an even more amazing nite with our US family. Thanks sooo much for making it so very special for us.

Day 1–Start of Holiday

It was finally here, Neha & Pooja were super excited up at 5am. Had planned to meet at the Airport @ 7am. check-in, immigration was uneventful other than the slow speed @ Brisbane, it seems to be getting worse!

Buying dutyfree was interesting, I had enquired beforehand on how to carryon dutyfree alcohol if also travelling via a domestic flight transfer. Essentially if the alcohol was placed in Secure Temper Evident Bags (STEB), then carrying them on US domestic flights was ok. Well this information was being contested by the sales girl who was 100% sure based on her numerous travels to US that it was not possible and the alcohol would be confiscated. After numerous checks on the websites, I decided to purchase the dutyfree and get it packed in the STEB. Well it worked fine and there was NO issue in the US domestic flight, well actually the local domestic providers were not even aware of the rule which was on their own website!! For all travellers to US, you can buy alcohol dutyfree and take it as carry on in a domestic flight as long as the bottles are in a STEB and the bag is not damaged.

Quick breakfast @ Windmill Café in the departures lounge, this place is very good! Nothing like Beer breakfast Smile

On the flight, we had two 4 row seats, kids were in one and we took the other, well that did not last too long, the shuffling started soon after. By the end, everyone had changed seats including the adults! Flight was LOOOONG, and it was a relief to finally land @ LAX.

Out of immigration, collected our bags then off to Southwest Airlines to transfer onto San Francisco. Landed in San Francisco close to 2pm.

IMG_9655

Getting out of the arrivals hall, we could definitely see the American difference by the size of the cars that were there, everything is BIGGER!! The UTEs were bigger, the Cars bigger, the shuttle buses were bigger, could definitely see the “American Muscle” attitude in the vehicles.

Drivetime to our Hotel @ Fisherman’s Wharf was around 45 minutes, passed some great sights and got to see the Wharf area very well. I had thought the area was small with just one or two piers, the place went for a LOOOONG way, with over 20 piers!
Arrived @ Radisson just after 3 pm, unfortunately the rooms were not ready, apparently in US check-in time is @ 4pm. It was then off for a leisurely walk around the Fisherman’s Wharf area which was literally behind our hotel.

IMG_9660IMG_9663
(Madame Tussauds @ Fishermans Wharf)

4:30pm we were in our rooms, quick shower, freshen up and out again at 6pm, everyone was excited to see the surroundings and make the most of it, Meeta was keeping us on schedule to cover all the sights!
After more than 18 hours of total travel time, the kids were still energetic to get out and see it all.

Some of the highlights…

Dinner was easy, Priya Narsey had recommended the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, food and drinks were both top notch!! This place serves some amazing seafood, everyone including kids stuffed themselves well Smile
Thanks Priya for suggesting that, starting our first US dinner on a very positive note.

Post dinner stepping outside, weather was very very chilly, the bay breezes also did not help. A bit of a change from the Brisbane weather!

30 days and counting……

d-date is just around the corner now, even more pronounced with Pooja maintaining a continuous countdown and making sure everyone around her knows it!!!
Tonight her Taekwondo instructor “John” also mentioned about the holiday and Pooja letting everyone know that we are only 30 days away – I think he is getting a bit irritated and also jealous  😉

All hotels and internal transfers booked, all that is remaining now is the theme park tickets and airport transfers!!

Meeta just informed us of the weather , SF max is 17 degrees C and LA is not much better @ 22 (in April) ! More warm clothes to be packed for the kiddos!! This time we will need to be better prepared than our HongKong 2011 trip.

Now back to counting down, bring on Vegas!!

Day 13–Istanbul Last Day

Last day today in Istanbul, had a big late breakfast than final pack up, brought all luggage down to concierge, and completed the check out process. Now to browse the side streets of Taksim and spend the day just chillaxing!

Went through a few side streets and somehow ended back at the Istiklal Street. This truly seems to be the heart of Taksim.

DSC02528DSC02529DSC02531DSC02536DSC02538DSC02547

Some more last minute shopping, then we decided to split and just roam about, and all meet together around 5pm.

For lunch we tried out the HOUSE Cafe, they served the best mushroom risotto.

DSC02545DSC02546

Then it was more roaming about, finally off to Taksim Square to meet up with Jayesh & Priya.

DSC02577DSC02586

All headed directly to Musafir Indian restaurant, wanted to have an early dinner. The chef “Momi Raja” cooked up a great Aloo Paratha and also provided the recipes to Nita & Priya (still waiting for the home version!). We were becoming regulars there, this was our third and FINAL Sad smile visit.

DSC02596DSC02600
(crew at Musafir Indian, Momi Raja – chef between Jayesh/Priya)

Bid our farewell, and headed back to the Hotel, quick freshen up and it was not long before our taxi was there to take us to the airport. Ride to the airport was met with heavy traffic, the half hour ride took over 1 hour – lucky we left early.

Nothing real flash about Istanbul airport, we had our last EFEs beer in the pub and than it was time to board. Unfortunately with the full flight, all four could not sit together. Flight departed on time @ 12:40 am, dinner service was quickly done which included the normal Turkish cuisine, Nita totally rejected it and I only had a small bit – lucky we had a big Indian dinner earlier.

Landed at Bangkok airport just past 2pm local time, bid farewell to Jayesh & Priya – they had to catch their flight in 5 hours, we had a 10 hour wait, so decided to head out and see Bangkok. We all shared a great holiday experience together and the memories will be cherished for a long long time.

Took a train from Bangkok airport to the Siam mall, which was massive and on a grand scale. Had a great Italian lunch, Nita was able to do some quick shopping – gifts for Mum and Tina. Then it was back at the airport, for a quick shower and a foot massage. Had a Thai meal at the airport around 9:30 pm, this was soooo nice & spicy, than around 11:10pm it was to the gates for our flight departing at 11:59pm.

Landed in Brisbane and jetlagged, Dad, Pooja and Veer came to receive us, Pooja was overjoyed at seeing us and even Veer was cracking up. Lunch & Dinner was at Mum’s, Nita was loving that – finally some good home food!

Slept in a fair bit, woke up the next day at 11:30 am, and then it was clean up time, Nita had lots of washing up to be done. Pooja was settling back in – sorting her dolls in her doll house. With me still in Istanbul mode, I refused to eat at home and ate out for lunch & dinner – it is always so good to just go out, order, eat and leave….. no making and cleanup mess!!!

Friday we were more settled, Nita was now back in action in here kitchen and cooked a full desi meal for lunch …. finishing off with rice and dhal. Around 12:30pm we got the confirmation call from in-laws in Fiji, Neha had been handed over to the airline crew as unaccompanied minor and was waiting for boarding – flight was delayed by 40 minutes and was now due to depart at 2:30pm (BNE time).
We got to the airport at around 6:40, just around when the flight landed, followed by the anxious wait, our baby was coming back.
After what seemed like an eternity, she finally emerged accompanied by the crew, Nita was already in tears, Pooja was just over joyed.

(Neha home after nearly 3 weeks in Fiji)

Headed home to mums place, lots of rejoicing…..

All good things must come to an end, this was the end of a great holiday for all of us, thanks to Jayesh & Priya for a being a great company and going along with my crazy jokes …….. till the next holiday “elvida” (goodbye in Turkish).

Day 12–Istanbul Princess Islands

Today for breakfast we decided to try the iST cafe in Istiklal St (we had our first Taksim lunch here). Breakfast was good, but not to the buffet style variety of Titanic. Still they have the best milkshakes!
Plan today was to visit the Princess Islands, the ferry departs from Kabatas, so it was a short subway ride from Taksim. Reached the ferry piers around 11:30am, got on board the 12 pm ferry. Being Sunday, the ferry was packed with locals and tourists. Locals love their weekends and they love to travel.

DSC02307DSC02310
(In the ferry, first stop Kadikoy (asian side) – the mass of people waiting to get onboard!!)

It was close to 1.5 hours before we reached the largest island in the group – “BUYUKSEHIR”. The islands are not that far from Istanbul, coastline is always visible during the 1.5 hours of sailing, not once did the coastline showed signs of open lands, the place is jam packed with apartments, and high rises for 100’s of miles…. it does house over 25 million!

Got off at Buyuksehir island..

DSC02321DSC02319DSC02322DSC02318
(disembarking at Buyuksehir Island)

This is one busy island with lots of people, we did after all come on the busiest day – Sunday!! It did add to the atmosphere.

DSC02324DSC02327DSC02336DSC02338DSC02347DSC02348DSC02352

For lunch, the only option on the island seemed to be Turkish or Turkish, we found some Waffle shops putting together some amazing fruit, ice cream combinations and that seemed like what we needed for lunch …

DSC02362DSC02370DSC02372DSC02376DSC02378
(waffles for lunch)

Some more roaming about on the island, then there was not much else to see, well not much to keep us 4 interested. Decided to take the express 4pm ferry back to Kabatas.

(Tired – on the way back to Taksim in subway from Kabatas)

Out of the Subway, decided to head directly to Musafir Indian restaurant, ladies needed some good food. The waffles just did not cut it.

Following a good dinner, headed back to the hotel for a quick freshen up then out and about to explore the night Istiklal Street.

DSC02510DSC02511

It had been a long night, and around midnight, we headed back to the hotel. Near our hotel, we passed a group of Indian boys, who we had seen previously at Musafir restaurant. In typical Indian style, they started rubbing their chest and singing “Tu pyar hai kise aur ka, tujhe cha ha ta koi aur hain”, the ladies were cracking up laughing and all me and Jayesh could think of was typical “BARUCH”. Ladies were why did you not sing back with a counter song……. what da!!!!

Great way to finish off the last night in Istanbul
